Minimalist Styling Tips

Stripped down, simple, clean. Those are just a few words that describe Minimalism. This fashion trend has been in circulation since the 80’s, and became more prominent in American fashion during the 90’s. Don’t believe me? Just google Calvin Klein. Let me just say that art and fashion go hand in hand with one another. In art minimalism is defined as a style that uses pared down design elements, well that statement applies to minimalism in fashion also. Which brings me to  starting off this post with a basic principle that you’ll need to keep in mind if you want to conquer this style: Less is more.

Asides from being that type of style described with words like “clean & simple”, you also need to familiarize yourself with how silhouettes, tailoring, modernity, textures and contrast work. I hope this post will inspire you, or help you with mastering this style! & don’t forget to comment below.

Modern Minimalism

The Basics:

1). Contrast: Contrast is something every fashionista needs to get down, it can be applied to all types of styles, trends etc! All you need to do is look for opposite shades or colours that will flatter the other. Black and white is the gold standard of combos, the two are dynamic together! Black and white work best for an effortless look, and well isn’t that just one of the points to minimalism? knowing how to look put together, while doing so effortlessly, and with ease. You can.. Pair a white tunic or top with black pants for this effect.

2). Silhouettes & Tailoring: This includes deconstructed, and structured pieces. Minimalism is renowned for straying away from the conventional form of cinched waists, or accentuating ones booty. Yes there are form fitted outfits that are considered the m word, but with minimalism you can be a little more adventurous than what’s conventional. Look for pieces that are deconstructed ie. trapeze styled tops. They’re loose, voluminous, over sized, and have a relaxed fit. Or cocoon coats. You can also play with structured pieces, and opt for looks that give the illusion of giving you, and your outfit sharper, boxy features. Play with necklines, volume, length, modern shapes, and layering.

3). Texture: Texture adds depth to an outfit, and enhances our senses of both sight, and touch.Texture is something that can be played with, and you know I love a good textured item, like a handbag, or a coat.

4). Colour: What works for minimalism are colours that are muted (but not limited to). Think neutrals, earthy tones, pastels, or deep dark shades. Neon on the other hand doesn’t work well with Minimalist styles.

5). Accessories: Look for accessories that are simple, elegant or delicate.  If your look is streamlined as is, opt for a handbag that pops, go for something textured, or stray from the rules and go for a handbag that doesn’t fit with the outfits theme.
